DESIGNS
In the design session each group was asked to choose a person or situation from the observations made the day before and to design something to enhance, augment, support or subvert this experience of waiting.
See photographs of the design session..
GROUP 1
Taking the appropriation of objects and spatial areas by 'waiters' as inspiration, Group 1 designed a healthy alternative to the cigarette as social defence from
unwanted attention and self-consciousness caused by waiting.
The 'myst-air' is a breath-activated device that emits a fine mist of water into the air around the person waiting. This mist creates a spatial distance between the 'waiter' and others sharing the space.
GROUP 2
Group 2 came up with a multitude of designs.
application one: people leave traces of their waiting in a public space over time (through special shoes or thanks to an 'enhanced ground'). by navigating a space with a mobile phone, users can see these traces in the form of footsteps, roughly indicating how many people have been waiting in that particular space. this information is meant to affect decisions people take about where to wait.
application two: people can project a map into the floor. the map projected can rotate depending on the position of the person reading it an any particular time. This would allow more than one person to access information on a map and discuss it, and it would avoid having only a person in charge of decisions in terms of space navigation.
GROUP 3
Group 3 was inspired by the observations that had been made on the relationship between time and money, and the perceived
lack of value in waiting.
From this starting point they came up with a new twist on the brand loyalty card - the 'Moo' card - which earns its owner points while they wait. These points can be exchanged for goods in the future, for example, if you decide to leave an over-crowded tube and wait for the next train then you would be rewarded with points on your 'moo' card that you might exchange for an ipod when you had collected enough.
