Waiting - the environment's perspective
Waiting, in the context of the urban environment, implies physical presence and co-presence. The fact that I am waiting for something means that I am physically present in a specified "waiting" location - defined both physically (i.e. the bus stop) and logically (i.e. a queue). Furthermore, when waiting for something I am usually within proximity of other who are also waiting.
Presence and co-presence are two aspects of waiting that I explore in my research. In terms of physical presence, what can the environment sense and infer from people's patterns of presence and movement? How can the environment react to different patterns of presence? If you decide to join a queue, what does this imply?
Furthermore, waiting and physical presence is coupled with co- presence. Can the environment infer implicit or explicit social groups and networks? How can this information be used to shape and adapt the services offered by the environment?
