A bench. 'It's not the destination, it's the journey'
Car parked on the hard shoulder; example of someone for whom a transitional space is non-transitional
A person cycling through a red traffic light, car parked across numerous parking spaces; example of subversive behaviour.
Homeless man on a bench; waiting til Wednesday.
Man in the park waiting for his son to finish a baseball game and for a baseball game to begin on the radio. Equipped with many technologies for waiting: radio, tobacco, crosswords, candies.
Approached a pharmacy drive-through without a car. Curiosity of staff at unusual behaviour.
Appropriation and alteration of a transitional space to play cricket.
Present and non-present, in transition; shops with signs saying 'call and I will come'; owners who are just 'passing through'
Boxes on the floor suggest and control possible behaviours
Kid in the park waiting for his party guests to arrive; appropriation of the park for individual needs;
Left a message written on the pavement; woman approached asking for money to buy a pint of milk while they wrote message
Someone in a strange vehicle communicated identity through this means
For the person working in the milk drive-through, this is not a transitional space.
GROUP 2
Jeff Axup, Arianna Bassoli, Maia Garau, Erica Nobles

Chronological order of the photos in the presentation reflects the journey through the mall
Road and parking; all transitional spaces. Parking is transition between road and mall
Bench with fabric roof in the car park; top-down attempt to change a transitional space into a non-transitional one
Woman with two babies who had appropriated a seat in the mall.
Street signs give a sign of urbanity but then you notice that they point to shops
Cleaners removing all traces of past activities and presence
A stall in the outdoor space where you can get your hair done.
Rules say that only performers are allowed on the stage. Subversive act to stand on it.
Graffiti has been painted over
Left a message in a mall brochure and replaced it for someone else to find
GROUP 3
Barry Brown, Silvia Lindter, Karen Martin

Questioned the concept of spaces being 'transitional'
Is a ferry a transitional space, or just a boat? How do you define transitional spaces? More difficult to do than define transitional phases?
Is the pier a destination, a working place or a passing-through place?
Different type of space for different people. For the guards who work there it is not a transitional space.
A ruler fastened to the wooden barrier as example of a technology brought into the space
No socially unacceptable behaviour found but plenty of rules (written on the ground) defining legally acceptable behaviour
The area between the sea and the shore is a very transitional space
Tried to leave a message there but it was instantly washed away
Places often linked to what people do in them. Pier linked to people fishing and walking
Thought communicated with others through appearance and actions.
