PARTICIPANTS     SCHEDULE     OBSERVATIONS     DISCUSSION     DESIGNS

In the design session each group was asked to choose a person or situation from the observation session and to design something to enhance, augment, support or subvert this transitional experience.

GROUP 1
Choosing the psychic booth they had seen that used to be a drive-thru, Group 1 created an entirely transitional experience.

The psychic Jacqueline Lee (they have a flyer), drives her psychic van wherever it needs to go. Customers place their palm on a palm reader accessed through curtains on the side of the van for Jacqueline to provide a reading.

Creating opportunities for transition, the psychic is mobile and able to help at moments of transition for her clients lives

A second design was presented for the homeless guy in the park who was waiting for Wednesday.

A calendar in which it is perpetually Tuesday lets him maintain the fantasy of becoming rich on Wednesday without facing disappointment.

GROUP 2
The homeless man in the park also inspired Group 2.

Deciding that he needed a place he could feel secure and sleep, and inspired by the Tuk Tuk vehicles in Vietnam, Group 2 designed a recycling cart that would also provide accommodation. The collection of rubbish for recycling offers a service to the community through which Group 2 hoped the homeless man would be more accepted by society.

GROUP 3
Group 3 designed a project for the pier, identifying two groups of people who used the space but had little direct communication - the fishermen and the passers-by.

Deciding to keep the passive relationship between the two groups, they re-fitted the pier floor with 'smart wood' which glitters with different colours depending on the amount of activity nearby. The activity of catching a fish creates a lot of activity which is marked on the floor of the pier.

Passers-by will take the colour with them as they walk, right down as far as they can go, to the end of the pier. The fishermen at the end of the pier now know that someone they cannot see is the most active fisherman at that time.
